The double hit: humidity + UV
In May, two things happen at once: the air gets more humid and UV rays get stronger. For healthy hair, that's not a problem. For hair with a damaged cuticle, it's a disaster.
The cuticle is the outer layer of the hair fiber, made of overlapping scales. When hair is healthy, the scales lie flat and protect the fiber. When it's damaged (by heat, sulfates, chemical treatments), the scales stay open. Humidity gets in, the fiber absorbs water unevenly, and the hair swells and loses its shape.
UV rays make it worse: they dry out the fiber, fade color and speed up damage.
Why anti-frizz products with silicones don't fix it
Silicones coat the fiber with a film that makes it smooth for a while. But they don't repair the cuticle: they cover it.
The effect lasts one wash. At the next one, the frizz comes back, often worse, because the film kept nutrients from getting in.
